Insulation fitted under ECO4 or GBIS? Check your repair options

Choosing an insulation specialist

How to find and check a company for a survey, removal or repair — and how to ask us to introduce one who covers your area.

There is no public directory behind this page. We do not list, rate or endorse companies, and we do not hold any trade accreditation ourselves. If you ask, we pass your enquiry to Better Home Hub, which may introduce a specialist who pays it a fee for that introduction. Whoever you use, check them yourself using the steps below.

Two short steps. Sending an enquiry is free and does not commit you to anything.

First, check whether someone else should be paying

  • External wall insulation fitted under ECO4 or the Great British Insulation Scheme: there is a free inspection and repair route through TrustMark. How the Find & Fix route works.
  • Cavity wall insulation: you may hold a guarantee from CIGA, the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency. How CIGA guarantees work.
  • Recent work you paid for: go back to the installer first, in writing, and check the guarantee paperwork they gave you.

How to check a specialist before you agree to anything

Is the company real?

Look the business up on Companies House. Check the name and address on the quote match, how long it has traded, and whether it is active.

Search Companies House

Is it registered for this kind of work?

Installers of energy-efficiency measures are often TrustMark registered. Ask which scheme a firm is registered with and check the register yourself rather than trusting a logo.

Search the TrustMark register

Who is surveying the property?

For a survey report you may need to rely on later, ask for the surveyor’s qualifications and check any RICS membership on the RICS register.

Find a RICS-regulated firm

Insurance and guarantee

Ask to see a current public liability insurance certificate, and ask whether any guarantee on the work is insurance-backed, so it still stands if the company stops trading.

Get it in writing

Get a written quote that sets out the scope of work, what is excluded, the price, the payment stages and the guarantee. Get more than one quote, and be wary of large deposits or pressure to decide on the spot.

Your right to cancel

If you agree a contract in your home or online, you usually have 14 days to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Work started inside that period at your request may still have to be paid for.

What happens if you ask us

  1. You tell us what the problem is and where the property is.
  2. With your consent, your enquiry goes to Better Home Hub, which looks for a specialist who covers your area and that kind of work. We cannot promise one is available.
  3. If a specialist takes it on, they contact you. Any survey, quote or contract is between you and them.
  4. You are free to say no, and to compare them with anyone else.
